5 Daily Rhythms for Overwhelmed Moms Who Need a Reset

Do you ever feel like life is just flying by… and you can barely keep up?

The days feel rushed, chaotic, and overwhelming—and deep down, you just wish you could slow down and actually enjoy this season of motherhood.

I’ve definitely been there.

For so long, my default has been constantly rushing from one thing to the next, trying to keep up with everything, but never fully present for what matters most. I have realized that something needs to change if I truly want a slower, more peaceful, more intentional life… one with Jesus at the center and more room for my family.

So I’ve been on a journey to trade the chaos for peace.

Today, I want to share 5 daily rhythms for overwhelmed moms. These aren’t things I do perfectly, but the more consistent I get with them, the more they help me slow down and make a meaningful difference in my home, my mindset, and my walk with God.

If you’re in a season where sitting and reading feels hard, or you just love learning through video, I’ve got you covered. I also shared these daily rhythms in a relaxed YouTube video so you can listen along while you’re folding laundry, making coffee, or catching a quiet moment.

Now let’s walk through the first daily rhythm that can help bring peace and structure back into your day.

1. Wake Up Before the Kids

One of the most impactful rhythms for me has been waking up before my kids.

Now, I know this isn’t always possible in every season—and that’s okay. But even waking up just 30 minutes earlier can completely change the tone of your day.

Quiet time with Jesus is an essential daily rhythm

This quiet window of time allows you to prepare your heart and mind before the demands of the day begin.

Lately, I’ve been starting my mornings with a glass of electrolyte water and a little light movement—like stretching or mobility. It helps gently wake up my body and mind so I can ease into the day with intention. From there, I move into quiet time with Jesus—spending time in His Word, in prayer, and simply being with Him—which truly sets the foundation for everything that follows.

Here are some other simple ideas of how you could use this time:

    • Write in a journal or plan your day
    • Write out a meaningful scripture on a notecard
    • Do a quick tidy of high-traffic areas
    • Start a load of laundry or dishes

It doesn’t have to be complicated. The goal is simply to create a peaceful start. Because when we begin our day in peace, it’s so much easier to stay in that peace.

2. Prioritize Being with Jesus

The second rhythm is to prioritize Jesus.

It’s important that this includes both a quiet, set apart time with Him, as well as learning to abide in Him throughout the day.

God's word reduces stress and is essential for victory in motherhood

Both of these things take some practice. You will have really good days where you and Jesus are in stride, you feel His tangible presence, and everything is flowing. But you will also have days where you struggle to focus on Him, or maybe quiet time gets missed all together, and you realize most of the day has flown by before you’ve even said hi to Him.

Just take a deep breath, it’s ok.

One of the amazing things about Jesus is that His mercies are new… every. single. morning. We can just simply try again.

And we must try again, because Jesus truly is our lifeline and the only true way in which we can live a purposeful, peaceful, and victorious life.

In fact the scriptures, boldly and clearly tell us that apart from Him, we can do nothing. Jesus says in John 15, verses 4 and 5,

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing.”

3. Limit Screen Time

This one might hit close to home… because it definitely does for me.

Limiting screen time is one of the most challenging rhythms on this list—but also one of the most powerful.

Reducing screen time is a daily rhythm that helps overwhelmed moms

The more I reduce time spent on my phone, scrolling, or consuming content, the more I notice:

    • My mind feels clearer
    • My stress levels go down
    • I feel more present with my family

We live in a world of constant noise and information. And while we may not always realize it, that constant input can leave us feeling overwhelmed and mentally drained. We were never meant to live in this constant flow of information and entertainment coming at us all day long.

Have you ever picked up your phone for a “quick scroll”… only to realize 30 minutes (or more) have passed?

And instead of feeling refreshed, you feel rushed and behind?

If we want to truly slow down and create a more meaningful life, this is a rhythm we must be extra intentional about.

4. Get Outside and Go for a Walk

One of my favorite ways to slow down is something beautifully simple:

Going on a walk outside with my daughter.

Stepping away from the house, the to-do list, and the noise creates space to just… breathe. Fresh air, sunshine, and movement do wonders for both our bodies and our minds. Lately, I’ve been learning to take this a step further by intentionally slowing down during our walks.

Instead of treating it only as exercise, I try to slow down and notice:

    • The breeze
    • The sounds around us
    • The beauty of nature

In this season, I let my toddler walk beside me for part of our walk instead of staying in the stroller the whole time.

Yes—it slows me down.

But it also creates space for the sweetest moments:

    • Picking flowers
    • Looking for rocks
    • Simply enjoying time together

These are the moments we don’t want to rush past. These are the moments that gently slow us down and call us back to what matters most. They clear our minds, anchor us in the present, and create space to hear from God.

5. Protect Margin in Your Day

The final rhythm that has helped me slow down is protecting margin.

This has been a big learning curve for me. I tend to be someone who says “yes” easily… who sees open space on the calendar and fills it. But I have learned the hard way that filling every moment of our schedules, or every moment of our day, with something that needs to be done, is a direct flight to burnout

Not only am I trying harder to protect white space on my calendar, I’m also learning to create smaller to-do lists.

I used to make these long, ambitious lists… and then feel discouraged when I didn’t finish them. I would also be so focused on the to-do list that I missed so many opportunities to make more memories with my family. It’s even easier to miss God speaking to us if we are constantly going, going, going.

Now I try to focus on only the most important priorities.

    • Spending time with Jesus
    • Supporting my husband
    • Caring for my family
    • Keeping the most important parts of my home running

Everything else can wait. Because the truth is…

Not every moment needs to be filled with productivity.

Some of the most meaningful moments happen when we simply slow down and be present.
