
Taking Every Thought Captive: A Mama’s Guide to a Victorious Thought Life
Mama, let’s get real — our minds are busy. Between grocery lists, diaper changes, toddler tantrums, homeschooling decisions, and wondering if we’re doing enough, our thought life can easily get overwhelmed. But here’s the truth: what we think about has everything to do with how we experience life.
If we’re constantly focused on what could go wrong, anxiety follows. If we dwell on past hurt or hard circumstances, discouragement can take root. But when we fill our minds with Jesus—His promises, His presence, His power—we begin to walk in victory, even when life feels chaotic.

What Are You Experiencing Right Now?
Stop and ask yourself: “What am I experiencing today?”
That answer will often reveal what you’ve been meditating on in your thought life.
Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV) says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Our thoughts shape our inner world—and eventually, our outer one too. This is why it’s so important to be intentional with what we let stay in our minds.

My Story: From Negative Thinking to Renewed Thinking
Unfortunately, my thought life used to be mostly negative. I struggled so badly with always expecting the worst, worrying about anything and everything, and constantly dwelling on my past mistakes and shortcomings. My focus was totally off, and my mind was completely un-renewed.
But, mama—there is hope.
The closer I’ve gotten to Jesus and the more I’ve learned the powerful truth found in the Word of God, the more I’ve been able to take control over my thoughts. Now, my thoughts have shifted to be more positive than negative. I’m still on this journey, still learning and practicing, but the difference between where I used to be and where I am now is truly significant.
I know from personal experience: we cannot truly be victorious mamas if we don’t grab hold of our thought life and renew our minds to the truth.
Just Because a Thought Shows Up Doesn’t Mean You Have to Keep It
Thoughts will come—some random, some hard, and some straight from the enemy. But mama, you don’t have to keep every thought that shows up.
God hasn’t left us powerless here. In 2 Timothy 1:7, we’re reminded that He’s given us a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind (hello, self-control!). Even if this is new for you, it is possible to take charge of your thoughts instead of letting them run wild.

Training Your Mind in Truth Takes Time — and That’s Okay
Taking control of your thought life doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process—a daily practice of letting go of lies and holding onto truth. Philippians 4:8 (NIV) is such a helpful filter:
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Not every thought that comes is worth keeping. That’s where 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV) comes in:
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.“
Mama, that means you get to choose. Will I hold onto this thought, or will I kick it out?
3 Simple Steps to Start Taking Thoughts Captive Today
If you’re not sure where to start, here are three practical and powerful steps:
1. Recognize the thought
Pause and notice what you’re thinking. Does it line up with God’s truth, or is it based in fear, shame, or worry? Awareness is the first step.
2. Replace the lie with truth
Once you’ve recognized a thought that doesn’t line up with the Word of God, actively replace it. Speak Scripture out loud if needed. Philippians 4:8 and 2 Timothy 1:7 are great places to start!
3. Stay connected to the Source of truth

New Rhythms Lead to Renewed Minds
At first, this practice may feel hard or even exhausting. But like anything else (toddler bedtime routines, anyone?), consistency leads to habit—and eventually, to transformation.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV) encourages us:
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
As your mind is renewed by God’s truth, your life begins to change. Not because you are strong enough, but because He is faithful to complete the good work He began in you.
A Simple Challenge for Today:
Take a few quiet minutes (yes, even if that means locking yourself in the bathroom!) and ask the Lord:
- “What am I experiencing right now?”
- “What thoughts have I been holding onto that aren’t from You?”
Let the Holy Spirit reveal where your focus has drifted, and then—by His strength—begin replacing those thoughts with His truth.
Mama, this is the path to peace. This is how we experience joy, freedom, and victory—even in the messiness of motherhood.
