- Large mixing bowl
- Spoon or fork for mixing
- Disposable pie tin or aluminum baking dish
- Aluminum foil
- Campfire grate or grill grate over hot coals

📸 Note: The ingredients pictured here are for a double batch—because one just isn’t enough when you’re camping with hungry kiddos! 😉
Ingredients
- Avocado oil spray (or cooking spray of your choice)
- ½ loaf of homemade sourdough bread, cut into 1” cubes (store-bought bread works too!)
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk (we use Fairlife—lactose-free and easy on the tummy)
- 2 tablespoons coconut sugar (a slightly healthier alternative to white sugar)
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt (I recommend Redmond Real Salt—it’s unrefined, mineral-rich, and free from added sugars, microplastics, or the harsh additives found in many conventional table salts.)
- 1 cup fresh raspberries
- Maple syrup for serving
How to Make Campfire French Toast
1. Prep the Bread: Cut your bread into rough 1” cubes. If you’re prepping at home, store it in a sealed container or bag.

2. Mix the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, coconut sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

3. Soak the Bread: Add the bread cubes to the bowl and gently fold until all pieces are well-coated with the egg mixture.
4. Prepare the Tin: Spray your disposable pie tin with cooking spray, then pour in the soaked bread mixture. Spread it evenly.

5. Add Berries: Sprinkle the fresh raspberries over the top.

6. Cover & Cook: Cover the tin with aluminum foil and place it on a campfire grate over hot coals (not flames). Rotate occasionally for even cooking.
7. Cook Time: Cook for 20–30 minutes, depending on your campfire heat. Carefully check halfway through, and again before removing from heat, to ensure it’s cooked through.

8. Serve & Enjoy: Remove the tin from the fire, take off the foil, and serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup!

Campfire Cooking Tips
🔥 Use Hot Coals, Not Flames
The key to evenly baked French toast is using hot coals rather than large flames. If your campfire grate is adjustable, lower it so the pan is just above the coals.
🥄 Expect a Casserole-Style Texture
This is more like a French toast bake than traditional pan-fried slices. It’s soft, gooey, and full of flavor—perfect for scooping straight from the tin and devouring with maple syrup.
📦 Make Ahead Tip
You can pre-cube your bread and even pre-mix your egg custard at home to save time at the campsite. Store each in airtight containers and combine when you’re ready to cook.
Make It Your Own
Want to switch things up? Try one of these fun twists:
- Add a handful of chocolate chips or chopped pecans
- Use blueberries or banana slices instead of raspberries
- Swap in brioche or challah for an extra rich texture

Campfire French Toast Bake (with Raspberries)
Ingredients
- Avocado oil cooking spray or cooking spray of choice
- 1/2 loaf homemade sourdough bread
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tbsp coconut sugar
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup fresh raspberries
- Maple syrup for serving
Instructions
- Cut bread into rough 1-inch cubes.
- In a large bowl, whisk eggs, then add milk, coconut sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well.
- Gently fold bread into the egg mixture until fully coated.
- Spray a disposable pie tin or foil baking pan with cooking spray.
- Pour bread mixture into the pan and spread evenly.
- Sprinkle raspberries on top.
- Cover tightly with aluminum foil.
- Place over hot coals (not direct flame) on a campfire grate.
- Cook for 20-30 minutes, rotating occasionally, until set and heated through.
- Remove from heat, carefully uncover, and serve with maple syrup.
Notes
- Campfire Setup: Use glowing hot coals for steady, even heat. Tiny flames flickering up from the coals are okay, but avoid larger, more active flames that can burn the bottom. An adjustable grate works best for controlling distance from the heat.
- Texture Tip: This bake will be soft and custardy—more like a bread pudding than pan-fried toast.
- Make Ahead: Pre-cut bread and pre-mix egg custard at home to simplify campsite prep.
- Bread Options: While sourdough is ideal, other types like brioche, French bread, or sandwich bread will work.
